Rescue operations  were ongoing last night  at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link bridge after a dispatch rider jumped into the deep waters on Tuesday evening.

The dispatch rider, whose identity was yet unknown as at press time, was said to have parked his motorcycle and jumped in before anyone could stop him.

Pedestrians and commuters watched aghast as he dived into the water with his gear leaving his motorcycle and the dispatch kit with deliveries.

Although they rushed to the barricade of the bridge to see if the rider would surface, he seemed to have sunk in, probably due to the heavy gear he had on.

When emergency services were alerted, the area was cordoned off with the help of the police, and as at press time, the rider was yet to surface or his body seen.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin said: “Our men are there, controlling the crowd as other rescue teams arrive. Until now, rescue operations are still ongoing because we are yet to see the said rider.”
