Sanusi Meets Niger’s Military Junta

14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, has met with the military junta of Niger Republic.

The meeting is coming barely 24 hours after a team from United States and representatives of the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) were, in separate attempts to meet the junta, denied access.

Earlier delegations led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III and Nigeria’s former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar achieved little success in their effort at bringing peaceful resolution.

The leadership of ECOWAS is expected to meet on Thursday to take action on the troubled country after the expiration of the ultimatum at the weekend to return power to democratically elected Mohamed Bazoum.

But on Wednesday, pictures of Sanusi, whose Tijjaniya sect has a large following in Niger, went into circulation. It’s however not clear what the outcome of the meeting was and how it would help the search for peaceful resolution of the crisis.
