Media Inclusion: WAYS Teens Takeover Empowers, Amplifies Youth Voices

Osayuwamen Saleh, the visionary Executive Producer of WAYS Show Africa, has introduced an impactful initiative called the WAYS Teens Takeover. This initiative provided a platform for the younger generation to engage in discussions on national and societal matters that shape their lives and mould them into future leaders. The unique endeavor took place from August 14 to 17, 2023.

The WAYS Teens Takeover is an extension of the dynamic panel show “What Are You Saying” (WAYS), where intelligent and vibrant young women discuss issues pertinent to African youth. Covering a wide spectrum of topics from education to technology, governance, health, and more, the show aims to educate, engage, and empower the next generation.

Saleh, the driving force behind the initiative, expressed her commitment to empowering youth: “The WAYS teens takeover was not just another show… the teenagers had a lot to say and they were well knowledgeable.”

The Teens Special, known as “The WAYS TEENS TAKEOVER,” was meticulously led by 17-year-old Yasmin Basharu, a student at the African Leadership Academy. Assisted by a talented team of teenager co-anchors including Alfa Saleh, Salma Basharu, Iteoluwa Onimole, Morolake Oridota, Adaora Fashanu, and Ezinne Odigbo, the initiative delved into crucial topics affecting adolescents.

Furthermore, The Teens Takeover addressed significant subjects such as “Molding Moral Leaders: Is Corruption Born or Bred?,” “Parasocial Relationships and Celebrity’s Influence on Gen Z Culture,” “The Art of Being Selfish: Productive or Problematic?,” and “Exploring Brain Drain: A Deep Dive.”

Joy Mathew, a Production Assistant, shared her experience: “Working closely with these teenagers taught me the power of networking and bonding because their wealth of wisdom was immeasurable.”

The innovative format of the WAYS Teens Takeover set it apart, incorporating live phone calls to foster direct interaction with the audience. This approach led to a remarkable 30 percent increase in livestream viewership, highlighting the appeal of the youthful hosts and their relevant topics.

Oluwadamilola Ibitoye, Internal control officer/vox pop coordinator, noted the power of youth ingenuity: “Their takeover was not just a moment, but a testament to the power of youthful ingenuity shaping the future of media.”

Also, audience feedback highlighted the brilliance of the teenage anchors, their effective communication, and the enhanced engagement through live phone calls.
