Nine states in Nigeria have been recognised and awarded for their commendable efforts in combating trachoma, a blinding eye disease.

Speaking at the award ceremony recently in Abuja, Trachoma Coordinator Sightsavers Dr Teyil Wamyil-Mshelia
announced a significant milestone in the fight against trachoma in Nigeria.

Wamyil-Mshelia stated, “These awards are a testament to the dedication of these states in combating trachoma.”

She noted that Sightsavers have identified crucial steps to be taken before WHO can certify Nigeria as trachoma-free.

She said, “ This includes eliminating active trachoma, conducting surgeries for trichiasis trachoma, ensuring thorough eye examinations, and maintaining facial cleanliness and environmental sanitation.”

Wamyil-Mshelia went on to highlight the exceptional work done by nine states in Nigeria. “These states have made commendable progress either in active trachoma elimination, trichiasis trachoma elimination, or both,” she noted. The honored states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Edo, Ebonyi, Kano, Katsina, and more.”

While celebrating their achievements, Wamyil-Mshelia emphasized the importance of continued efforts in environmental sanitation and facial cleanliness. “These practices are pivotal to sustaining the progress we’ve made,” she said.

“We urge all states to complete their work so that Nigeria can achieve Trachoma Elimination. WHO will only certify Nigeria as trachoma-free when all endemic states have completed their tasks.”

These awards signify a significant step forward in the battle against trachoma, with these states leading the way towards a trachoma-free Nigeria.
