The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, yesterday, assured the people of adequate security ahead of the off-season gubernatorial elections in Imo, Bayelsa and Kogi States.
This came as he said the crime rate in the country was on the decline following concerted efforts of the security forces, the citizenry and other stakeholders to contain criminalities in the country.
Speaking at a meeting with Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police in the 36 States and FCT in Abuja, the IG assured the public that, “adequate deployments and security measures will be emplaced to create an environment where every eligible voter can exercise their civic duty without fear or intimidation.”
He reiterated his determination to uphold the principles of democracy and ensuring peaceful, free, and fair elections while urging all stakeholders to work together and support police efforts to maintain the peace and security of these states before, during, and after the election.
He said the meeting was convened “to assess the security situation and discuss pertinent security matters as we approach the ember months, historically characterised by increased activities and heightened security concerns.”
He commended the dedication and tireless efforts of police officers, as well as the unwavering support of the government and the public, which collectively contributed to the notable decline in crime rates nationwide.
The IG, who decorated a newly promoted senior police officer, DIG Bello Makwashi, with his new rank as a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, acknowledged the critical role of police officers and relevant stakeholders in maintaining law and order.
He further expressed his heartfelt gratitude for their relentless commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, noting that the collaboration and coordination among various stakeholders proved instrumental to achieving positive anti-crime outcomes.
While emphasising effective and efficient policing services, he called on the public to continue to collaborate with the force via provision of timely information and vigilance for a peaceful, prosperous, and progressive nation during the ember months.
