A torrential downpour Saturday evening destroyed over 150 houses in Anguwan Rogo, Rikkos, Bauchi Road and Naraguta communities of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
A resident of Bauchi road, Mallam Tanko Alhassan, told newsmen that though no life was lost, the flood wreaked so much havoc in the area, washing away houses and other properties.
“The flood didn’t claim any life, but because it was huge, it destroyed over 150 houses, displacing residents.
“These people have lost all their properties and are left with nothing,” he narrated.
He added that the displaced persons are currently staying with neighbours, friends and relatives.
He called on government to come to the aid of the affected communities.
Another victim, Salamatu Aliu, said: “The flood took us by surprise. We never expected it. The heavy rain has destroyed my house and that of my neighbour as well as several other homes in Anguwan Rogo.
“We are calling on government and spirited individuals to come to our rescue because we are in serious distress.”
The rain, which began at about 3pm, fell heavily for over two hours. Traders at Terminus Market had to close their shops for the day as flood raged through the market and also caused serious gridlock.
Residents said they were surprised that in September, when rainfalls should be winding down in the North, such was experienced.
