Global Information and Communication Technology infrastructure provider, Huawei has restated its commitment to continuous investment in innovation in technologies and products to enable green energy to benefit all industries, thereby transforming them from energy consumers to energy producers.
The President of Huawei Digital Power, Sub-Saharan Africa Region, Xia Hesheng, affirmed this commitment during the Smart PV and Energy Storage System Summit for Nigerian Manufacturing and Commerce 2023 held at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, Lagos, on Monday, September 18, 2023.Speaking at the event, Hesheng disclosed that Green Power will eliminate all the numerous challenges with electricity and traditional energy, including constant power outages, unstable power, and the rising cost of Diesel, Petrol and Gas. He declared that only 52 per cent of Pops have access to power, with an average of 12 Hours of Power Outage per day, while fuel prices rose more than 3 to 4 times in 2023 compared to 2022.“The energy industry is shifting from ‘National Resources ‘to ‘Technological Innovation’. There are three main drivers accelerating the rapid growth of the solar industry: Carbon Neutrality (Global Consensus), Energy Sovereignty (Energy Security) and Business Value (Advanced Technology)”, he said. According to Hesheng, renewable energy as the primary source of energy stood at 28 per cent in 2020 and is projected to grow to 67 in 2030 and 91percent in 2050, respectively, while electricity as the core consumed energy stood at 22 per cent as of 2020 and expected to increase to 29 per cent in 2030 and 51percent by the year 2050. He stated that digital technologies are key enablers, with global power grid investment rising from 380 in 2020 to 1250 by 2030 and 3120 ($ 100 million) by 2030.“This is the best time for solar deployment for the manufacturing industry. Our Smart PV & ESS/UPS matches the manufacturing power supply requirement. The Return on Investment (ROI) period has reduced significantly from 5-7 years to 3-5 years.
Also, the price of Battery Cells and PV Panels have dropped 35 per cent and 38 per cent respectively between 2022 and 2023”, he added.Hesheng cited the successful case of Abuja Steel Mills with a load requirement of more than 20MW. He stated that Phase 1 of the solar power project has an installed 17MW Solar PV with the plan for Phase 2 to deliver another 15MW. He explained that before installation, the company spent about $2.3 million a year on electricity costs, which has now reduced to $1.0M, while the total Return on Investment (ROI) is projected to be fully achieved in 5 years.“Over the past two decades, Huawei has brought ubiquitous connectivity to Nigeria. In the next two decades, we will also bring ubiquitous green power to industries in Nigeria. We will bring green power to every person, home and organization. We will move from green house to green building, green factory, green campus, green village and green city”, he declared. The Director-General of the Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN), Segun Ajayi-Kadir, who was represented by the Director, Corporate Services Division, Ambrose Oruche, commended Huawei and MPDCL on the partnership initiative, stating that this noble idea would positively transform the manufacturing landscape, especially in the quest for a cost-effective clean energy source. Oruche explained that he was confident that the partnership with the company would redefine the manufacturing landscape and set new energy efficiency and sustainability standards. In his remarks, the Acting Managing Director of Manufacturers Power Development Company Limited (MPDCL), Oweh Mba-Sam, explained that the company is committed to partnering with credible vendors such as Huawei to provide sustainable power supply to MAN member companies.According to Mba-Sam, this partnership serves as an avenue for engagements to guarantee energy optimization for manufacturing through technology such as AI, supported by uninterrupted power devices.
He stated that the company is already exploring cheaper alternative power sources or means, such as Solar PV, to achieve energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing. Looking ahead, Huawei will keep innovating and working with partners, industry players, governments, industry organizations, and standards organizations to drive the high-quality innovative development of the PV and ESS industries. Green PV will become the main energy source for every home and business to accelerate carbon neutrality and build a better, greener future.
