Tribunal Nullifies Yusuf’s Election, Declares APC’s Gawuna as Kano Governor

Ahmad Sorondinki in Kano.

The Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has nullified the election of Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), and declared Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the March 18th gubernatorial election.

The Chairman of the three-man tribunal, Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadabey, said the margin of votes scored by the NNPP was not enough to give Governor Yusuf victory.

The tribunal declared 165,663 votes from Governor Yusuf’s total as invalid, stating that the ballot papers (165,663) were not stamped or signed and therefore declared invalid.

Osadabey, who gave the final judgment after cancelling some votes recorded by the NNPP, added that Yusuf was not the winner of the governorship election.

The three-man panel therefore ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the certificate of return it presented to Yusuf and issue same to Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of APC.
