A man identified as Mr. Oruchukwu Okoroafor, has been arrested for keeping three pregnant girls in his house.

The man was said to have been harbouring them, with the intention to sell off their babies when they deliver their babies.

Okoroafor was arrested at Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, where he had been residing with his wife and children by men of the Anambra Vigilante Services (AVS). The Chairman of Orumba South Local Government Area, Mr. Neville Uchendu, on whose order the man was arrested, said that an informant disclosed that the man who is from Arondizuogu in Imo State has been in the habit of renting apartment for pregnant girls, taking care of them and selling their babies when they deliver.

Uchendu said that it took three months for the vigilante operatives to investigate the matter, until today, when the suspect was arrested while ridding one of the girls who is 14 years old, and was perceived to be due for delivery, to an unknown destination.

He led the suspect to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, who in turn handed him over to the police after rescuing the girls.

The girls were said to be 14, 19 and 20 years old, and hail from Bayelsa, Imo and Anambra States, respectively.

The suspect said: “I’m not the one responsible for their pregnancies. I only offered to shelter them in my house pending when they put to bed.

“I saw them in different places and noticed that they usually sleep in the open, so I took them to my house.

“They (the girls) already have the intention to sell the babies, and one of them already has a buyer, who promised to pay N300,000 when the baby is delivered.

“I have been in this business for just two years, and this is my first batch of girls.”

Obinabo said that the suspect would be handed over to the police for further investigation, and consequently be charged to court for prosecution.
