Lagos Scoops Seven Medals in Swimming
*Delta dominates as fastest boy & girl of the 7th edition to emerge today
Team Lagos swimmers are expected to win more medals in the Swimming event at the ongoing National Youth Games following their swimmers superlative performance on the opening day.
Eight finals were decided on day one of competition with the state’s athletes claiming three gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
Oluwademilade Akanbi secured Team Lagos first Gold medal in the 50 meters backstroke for girls with the time of 32:62 seconds and went to claimed her second gold in the 100 meters butterfly, recording 1 minute, 19 seconds.
The team’s other gold medal was won by Chioma Kanu who recorded 1 minute, 27 seconds in the 100 meters breaststroke girls ahead of Ebigide Success of Team Delta and Ebia Obaten Gift from Team Cross Rivers.
The silver medals came from Funmilayo Dimeyin in the 200 meters Individual Medley and Inioluwa Dayo-Dumoye in the 100 meters Breaststroke boys.
The athletes’ dedication and skill, combined with the nurturing environment of their parents and schools enabled the swimmers to make the state proud at the National Youth Games.
The Centre of Excellence state swimmers are expected to rake in more medals in some of the yet to be decided events at the Swimming Pool of the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
Meanwhile, Team Delta’s sprint duo of Igbigbije Clifford and Bright Gift have qualified for the final of the Boys 100 meters event after winning their semifinals to keep hopes alive of claiming medals at the ongoing National Youths Games.
Bright Gift who ran in the second semifinals clocked the fastest time of the stage after clocking 11.11 seconds to finish as winner with Clifford Igbigbije also clocking 11.23 seconds in the first semifinal to place first.
In the Girls’ Category, Sunday Favour Isioma of Delta State out paced her competitors after clocking 12.44 seconds to win semifinal three while Ogbodu Excel placed third in the first semifinal behind her Anambra counterpart to book a place in the finals.
The finals of the Boys and Girls 100 meters event comes up this evening.
