A group of young professionals from Imo state have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Police and the Department of State Security (DSS) to ensure that the November 11 governorship election in the state was peaceful, credible and fair.
The young professionals who endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, urged INEC to ensure that the technical glitches that heralded the last general election were nipped in the bud.
Addressing a press conference yesterday, in Abuja, the National Coordinator of the Coalition of Imo Young Professional (CIYP), Chukwuemeka Emmanuel, appealed to President Bola Tinubu to use his good office to ensure a credible, free and fair governorship election on November 11.
According the national coordinator of CIYP, “Today, we wish to first and foremost, to call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the father of modern progressive politics in Nigeria, to please use his good offices as the President of the Federal Republic, to enforce free and fair elections in Imo State come November 2023.
“In the same vein, we wish to call on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and all other national Security’s chiefs that will deploy their personnel for electoral day duties during Imo 2023, to patriotically bear true allegiance to the Constitution of the Federal Republic by esteeming democratic integrity as a non-negotiable value far above all other possible considerations on Imo 2023.”
The group called on the people of Imo State to begin to make plans on how to legitimately use the power of the people to ensure freedom and fairness during the Imo 2023 gubernatorial election.
“As the wise adage goes, ‘to fail to plan, is to plan to fail.’ As another adage says, ‘Power can never be given, it can only be taken.’, we will do well to coalesce and take power for ourselves through the ballot box.
The group announced the PDP governorship candidate. Senator Samuel Anyanwu as its candidate of choice.
According to CIYP national coordinator “the issues favoring the emergence of Senator Samdaddy as the next Governor of Imo State are many. First, there is the issue of the need for the restoration of security of lives and properties to Imo State.
“Second, there is the issue of the need to enforce the equitable distribution of power amidst Imo State’s senatorial districts in accordance with the well-established principle of power rotation unhindered by a concocted alien right of first refusal being espoused by the Imo Charter of Equity.
“Third, there is the issue of accessibility to the grassroots; which is clearly a strong suite for Senator Samdaddy.
“Fourth, there is the issue of faithfulness in public office; which again favors Senator Anyanwu.”
