This weekend in Lagos, Tim and Carol, GRA Ikeja as well as Gemini Art Gallery in Onikan will host the members of the Society for Nigerian Artists (SNA) for the 17th edition of October Rain. The exhibition with the theme, ‘Cross Currents’ is one of the highlights of the association’s annual calendar. This year, the downpour of creativity is taking a different twist. As revealed during a press briefing in Lagos, the founder of Tim and Carol Gallery, Wale Fasuyi noted that the gallery will receive artists from Lagos and Ogun to the visual feast that honours one of Nigeria’s pioneering art educators and artist, PA Timothy Adebanjo Fasuyi.
“Pa Fasuyi has contributed a lot to the course of art in Nigeria,’’ the Chairman, SNA Lagos, Prince Kolawole Olojo-Kosoko said. “He is one person that has been under documented. He is like an encyclopedia. There is hardly anything that you want to discuss about art today that he does not have his hand in it. This administration of SNA is the first to use two galleries simultaneously for art exhibitions. Last year, we used Mydrim Gallery and Adeline Gallery at Ilupeju. This year, we are using two galleries too.
“Our vision concerning October Rain is that in the nearest future, this exhibition would have grown into a brand that galleries would be competing to host.”
Oladimeji Olagbemiga, the Chairman of the Ogun state SNA, explained the rationale for this first-of-its-kind collaboration which features 18 artists from Ogun.
“The whole world has become a global village where we need to synergize. Living in isolation is not the best because one might be missing a lot without knowing that there is more to life than being alone. In view of that, I believe that the collaboration is a way of exposing Ogun artists to the Lagos art market,’’ he explained.
The exhibition which opens on Sunday October 15 and runs till 29th has as special guest of honour, the Executive Director, Zenith Int’l Bank, Mr Akin Ogunranti.
