The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has said Nigeria harbours tremendous potential for growth and prosperity beneath its soil, and has vast resources that can spread across the African continent.
Alake made this statement at the second press conference of the 8th edition of the Nigeria Mining Week 2023, with the theme: ‘Unlocking Nigeria’s Mining Potential’.
The minister further emphasised his office’s commitment to harnessing these abundant mineral resources across the country.
He said: “I wish to commence by acknowledging the profound significance of the mining industry in the economic development of Nigeria. Beneath our soil lie vast mineral resources that harbour the tremendous potential for growth and prosperity.
“This potential extends not only to our country but also to the wider African continent. As we convene here today to brief you on the upcoming Nigeria Mining Week, it serves as a poignant reminder of the pivotal role this sector plays in diversifying our economy and employment generation opportunities for our citizens.”
The minister highlighted significant progress in the sector, thanks to critical reforms, modernisation of regulatory frameworks, and increased local and foreign investments.
The key objectives for the Nigeria Mining Week 2023, as outlined by the minister, include knowledge sharing among industry experts, stakeholders, and government officials; investment promotion to attract local and international investors, sustainable mining practices, skills development, and infrastructure enhancement in mining regions.
Alake further urged Nigerians and stakeholders to leverage incentives provided by the government to support the mining industry, emphasising the role of the sector in economic diversification and GDP growth.
He invited collective action and collaboration between the public and private sectors, civil society, and international partners to unlock Nigeria’s mining potential and create a brighter future for the country.
