200 Pass Niger Civil Service Examination

Laleye Dipo in Minna

Not less than 200 civil servants out of over 1,000 that attended a retreat organised for top civil servants by the Niger State Government early this year have been declared successful, to be promoted to the director cadre in the service.

The letters of promotion of those concerned (notifications) are already being prepared by the Civil Service Commission.

This is just as scores of school principals and senior teachers are to leave the service of the state government next year after putting in 35 years of service or attaining 60 years of age, to create a vacuum of experienced teachers and school administrators.

Speaking on the sidelines of the one-day interactive session organised by the Niger State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Minna yesterday, the Permanent Secretary, Human Resources, Alhaji Aliyu Goro, said those who scored below 54 percent in the examination conducted after the retreat would not be promoted, adding that those who had not stayed for 4 years on grade level 14 but took part in the retreat and wrote the examination will also not be promoted.

Goro, noted that some of those who attended the retreat and wrote the examination were ” not due for it,” and assured them that there are budgetary provisions for those that will be promoted.

The President of the Niger State chapter of the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Mr. Musa Mohammed, speaking at the forum, said a large number of experienced principals and senior school administrators would be leaving the service next year after putting in 35 years of service or attaining 60 years of age.

Musa said the development “will have dire consequences on the administration of schools in the state and the standard of education of students.”

He, therefore, asked the state government to implement the new policy of service approved by the federal government, which extends years of service to 40 years or 65 years of age.

A communique is expected at the end of the forum with the theme: ‘Internal Democracy in Trade Unions: The NUT Perspective’.
