The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has called on members of the State House of Assembly to immediately begin the impeachment process of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for violating Section 193(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
The party alleged that the state has been on auto-pilot for nearly six months, grounding all activities of the government due to the ill-health of the governor, who returned to the country on September 7 after his three-month medical leave in Germany.
But the assembly has urged Nigerians to ignore the PDP because it lacked knowledge of the duties of a governor.
At the same time, youths in the Southwest zone of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have expressed confidence in the administration of Governor Akeredolu.
In a statement by the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Kennedy Peretei, the PDP called on the assembly to invoke sections 189(1) to cause a Medical Panel to be instituted to ascertain Akeredolu’s medical status and do the needful in the interest of the people of the state.
The statement, titled: “It Is Time to Impeach Rotimi Akeredolu” challenged the rationale of Akeredolu to govern the state from his Ibadan residence, instead of Ondo State, where he was elected to rule, describing it as irrational and unconstitutional.
“The time has come for the Ondo State House of Assembly to immediately begin the impeachment process of Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN for violation of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
“It is no longer news that Ondo State has been on auto-pilot for nearly six months, grounding all activities of the government due to the ill health of the governor.”
The party alleged that, rather than tell the citizens the truth, most of Akeredolu’s handlers had resorted to insulting the sensibilities of the people by making a public show of their ignorance, thereby robbing the Governor of public sympathy.
But reacting, the assembly through its Majority Leader, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, urged Nigerians to ignore the PDP because it lacked knowledge of the duties of a Governor.
The House said the governor has been performing his constitutional duties and has not breached any aspect of the Constitution.
The lawmakers, who said the assembly has noted ongoing developmental projects across the state including prompt payment of salaries and clearing of backlog of salary arrears, stressed that the PDP lacked knowledge whether the State Executive Council meeting is being held or not.
“The Governor is doing his duties. Everything is going on well in the state. We have met with the Governor and all those that want to meet with him,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Southwest APC youths through their Zonal Youth Leader, Kolade Lawal Paff, at a press conference in Akure, said they acknowledge the genuine concerns expressed by the people of Ondo State regarding the whereabouts of the governor, but that his decision to seek rest and adjust normal work schedule to allow him fully recover is a testament to his human nature.
“Recent days have witnessed remarkable progress in various projects overseen by the administration, affirming unequivocally that governance in Ondo State is robust and resolute. Some of these noteworthy achievements include:Payment of Salaries and Leave Bonuses,
“Payment of Salaries and Leave Bonuses: Governor Akeredolu’s administration has continued to show its unwavering commitment to workers’ welfare. We are aware that salaries are being paid up to date.
“Just last week, the governor gave approval for the payment of leave bonus. The administration’s commitment to good governance and the welfare of its workforce is unparalleled, Palliatives for Vulnerables among others.”
