Methodist Cathedral, Palm Avenue Celebrates 70th Anniversary

All is now set for all members and well wishers of Methodist Church Nigeria, Cathedral of Blessing, Palm – Avenue, Mushin, Lagos to celebrate the 70th year anniversary of its existence as a Church. 

To celebrate the glory of God on its Church and the members as a whole, a one week line up full of various exciting and spiritually filled activities have been put in place towards this celebration starting from today, Saturday 28th October to Sunday 5th November, 2023.

The celebration starts with an awareness rally on Saturday 28th October within the vicinity where the Church is located in Palm – Avenue to kick start a powerful three – Day revival at the Cathedral by 5pm. This will be followed by visitations to select less privileged homes and some elderly members as part of the Church’s Corporate Social Responsibilities. In the same vein of giving back to its immediate environment, free medical outreach will be extended to everyone that comes around on Friday 3rd November at the Cathedral. 

While an Anniversary lecture will come up on same day with a theme, “Methodism Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’ to be delivered by Sir Gbolahan Obayomi. This will be followed on Saturday 4th November with a Remembrance and Awards service where select members (living and departed) will be recognized for their various contributions towards the creation, sustenance and purposeful leadership for the future of the Cathedral. This week long celebrations which will take place at Methodist Church Nigeria, Cathedral of Blessing, 102, Palm Avenue, Mushin, Lagos will come to an end with a special thanksgiving service and a N500 million appeal fundraising for the new Ultra Modern Hall on Sunday 5th November during the 9,00am service.

According to the Chief Host, the Bishop of Lagos West Diocese, Rt. Rev. Ezekiel Akande, the Cathedral to the glory of God since its creation 70 years ago has been able to achieve a lot of great things in terms of spiritual growth and expansion. Church planting which impacts directly and spiritually to immediate environs of wherever a church is established has been one of the success factors of the Cathedral. In his words, “ We are deeply grateful to the Almighty God, giver of all that is worthy and virtuous, that it has been 70 wonderful years of unceasing and faithful engagement in the propagation of the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ by the founding fathers and mothers of the Cathedral. To the glory of God, the Cathedral gave birth to other outstanding Churches like Methodist Cathedral, Opebi and other local Methodist Churches in Oke-Oja, Okota, Ikotun and Shasha respectively, all in Lagos.”

The Chairman of the Anniversary Committee, Sir Bola Awe equally reiterated that this anniversary thanksgiving is special in all ramifications taking into consideration all the feats and outstanding favors the Cathedral had received over the years as a Church. This has propelled and inspired this anniversary which is an anniversary of Praise and thanksgiving both to God and the people who have over the years released themselves for the service of God.

Sir Awe said, “This special 70th anniversary which is a watershed in the history of the Cathedral is expected to attract notable personalities within and outside the Methodist family to be led by the Secretary of Conference, Methodist Church Nigeria, The Rt. Rev. Babatunde Taiwo who will be ministering at the Special Thanksgiving service amongst other eminent men and women of God.”
