Damilare Oluwasegun: Staying Ahead in Comedy Requires Evolving Daily
Damilare Oluwasegun known by his stage name Asiricomedy is a comedian, author, speaker and founder of the Humorality Club, a hub for budding comic talents. He talks to Tosin Clegg about his craft
What inspired the name Asiricomedy and was it coined into your craft?
Asiri is a yoruba word that means secret. In a deeper context it could be translated as mysteries. Back then in the university, many of my peers found my sayings profound and as a result they use to call me “Bobo Asiri yen” meaning that Asiri guy.
The name made greater sense when I discovered it in Mark 4:11; It is given unto men to know the secrets of the kingdom of God. So, I adopted it after then and it has been a cascade of several mysteries ever since.
My ideas basically come from observation, research and ultimately my daily life experiences
How is your comedy exceptional?
I have found a balance between my intellectual skills and my entertainment expressions and it is evident in the high-end events I host, books I publish, brands and individuals I consult for among several other endeavours. For me the goal is simple and it is impacting one life at a time.
With the wave of several creators and talents today what are the basics to stay ahead?
Staying ahead requires evolving daily. Like I use to say, exclusivity is the wheel of premium.
What are your upcoming coming projects?
I have a comedy special titled “Open Secret”. We successfully filmed this in August and it is currently in post-0production phase which will hit global streaming channels soon.
I also have an event coming up in Transcorp Hilton, Abuja on November 19 where I will be treating Abuja elites to a night of complete depth, hilarity and insights.
What are some of the challenges you face and what lessons did you learn from them?
Plagiarism at some point was a challenge. People copied my ideas and approach a lot but then it is the reason why I have adapted most of my expressions into my life experience meaning I have passworded it.
You have to be me to replicate what I do. My materials for instance are majorly my life experience.
