The National Coordinator of the National Mental Health Programme at the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Tunde Ojo, has stressed the urgent need for accessible and effective mental health resources.

He emphasised the significant treatment gap in mental health cases in Nigeria, estimated to be as high as 90 per cent.

In a statement, Ojo highlighted the critical role that ‘A Plethora of Thoughts’, a card game which facilitates self-discovery and emotional well-being, can play in addressing this pressing issue.

Recent research from the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN) , he explained, has revealed alarming challenges faced by the youth population, with over 60 million Nigerians suffering from mental illnesses. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

“One in four Nigerians is estimated to be living with a mental disorder. Considering that over 60 per cent of Nigeria’s population is under the age of 25, according to the United Nations, addressing this growing concern is paramount.”

The National Coordinator described ‘A Plethora of Thoughts’, as an innovative card game specifically crafted to unlock the depths of one’s mind, assisting in navigating complex emotions and fostering a deeper understanding of oneself.

“A Plethora of Thoughts’, presents a transformative experience, encouraging introspection, self-reflection, and personal growth. By offering thought-provoking prompts and engaging gameplay, the game empowers individuals to explore their emotions, confront challenges, and embark on a journey of self-discovery. It provides a safe and supportive environment for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings, ultimately leading to improved mental well-being,” Ojo stated.

He noted that it emerges as a timely and essential solution and that with a structured framework for self-exploration, the game aims to empower individuals to confront and address their mental health challenges.

“Its innovative approach and emphasis on emotional well-being seek to bridge the gap in mental health support in Nigeria. In a country where misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health persist, ‘A Plethora of Thoughts’, stands as a beacon of hope, offering a transformative resource for individuals seeking self-discovery, emotional healing, and personal growth. The game has the potential to revolutionise how Nigerians approach and prioritise their mental health, promoting a more inclusive and supportive society.”
