Group Calls on Imo Governor to Render Public Apology for the Arrest of NLC Leader

The Dozie-Mezie Owerri Association, in a recent statement, has requested Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State to consider offering a public apology to Joe Ajaero, the national president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) within a 48-hour timeframe.
This situation arose when Joe Ajaero was reportedly detained at the Imo council secretariat of the NLC in Owerri by heavily armed police officers. The NLC claimed that Ajaero experienced physical aggression and was blindfolded after his apprehension by security personnel. On the other hand, the Imo State police command disputed these allegations, asserting that Ajaero was placed in protective custody to prevent potential disturbances.
In response to these events, the NLC has announced plans for a strike starting on November 8 to protest the purported assault on Ajaero.
During a press conference held in Abuja, Henry Chidi Opara, the president of the Owerri group, expressed disapproval of the attack on Ajaero, referring to it as an “unfortunate incident.” Opara emphasized the significance of upholding democratic principles, highlighting the importance of tolerance and respect for individuals’ fundamental rights.
He stated, “We kindly request Governor Uzodinma to issue a public apology within 48 hours.”
Opara also stressed the duty of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State to safeguard citizens, particularly NLC leaders who are engaged in national duties in compliance with the Constitution. Opara raised concerns about allegations of the Commissioner’s office being used for political vendettas, which he regarded as a violation of the Constitution and the Police Act.
The Owerri group has called on the Inspector-General of Police to instruct the Commissioner of Police in Imo State to identify the individuals responsible for the alleged assault against the Congress President. Specifically, they identified Mr. Chinasa Nwaneri, Special Assistant to Governor Hope Uzodinma, as the leader of the assailants and called for their legal prosecution.
In a final warning to Governor Uzodinma, Opara declared, “We wish to inform the public that if, after 48 hours from this press conference, Governor Uzodinma has not issued a public apology, we will interpret it as a deliberate challenge to the people of Owerri and a clear demonstration of ill will toward Owerri residents.”
