Kangimi Beats El-Amin, Lifts FirstBank Georgian Cup
Kaduna Kangimi returns to winning ways in on Sunday, winning the 103-edition of the annual FirstBank sponsored Georgian Cup at the Kaduna Polo Tournament. The victory came 10 years after the team last won the famous trophy.
Kangimi defeated Mohammed Babangida’s El-Amin by 13-7 to finish tops in the fiercely contested six-chukker encounter.
The Adamu Atta side recovered from an early setback, courtesy of a goal from Mohammed Babangida’s El Amin to send polo aficionados into wild jubilations.
The +18goal team comprising of Lado Aliyu +3, (who replaced the teams Patron, Atta), Abdulrahman Mohammed +3 and two top players from Argentina; Facundo Ratamar +6 and Nicolas Recaite +6, took control of the match despite the early setback to overcome El-Amin, who similarly lost in the finals of the last edition to Abuja Rubicon.
Goals from Recaite, Lado, Retamar and Abdulrahman aided Kangimi’s victory.
But El-Amin side, comprising of Mohammed Babangida+3, Ibrahim Babangida, Ringa Genaro, Bauste Arastus fought back in the fourth chukker but their effort came to nothing in the face of the hard-fighting Kangimi.
Speaking shortly after prize presentation, star player of the match, Policeman Lado Aliyu, described his team’s victory as a welcome development, stressing that “it’s been over 10 years that we last won this famous FirstBank sponsored trophy.”
Also speaking, FirstBank’s Group Executive, Retail Banking, North; Shehu Aliyu said FirstBank brand is proud to associate with the Georgian Cup.
“We believe in legacies, and we build legacies across our relationships and that is what we at FirstBank do with our sponsorships. The Georgian Cup which is the most prominent is also part of our legacies because we believe in legacy”, he noted.
While restating that FirstBank will continue to honour its commitment to sponsorship of the Georgian Cup, Aliyu said, “in doing this, we have been able to support the nurturing of and discovery of talents in most of the sports we are committed to”.
