The Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), Monday, reassured civil servants in the state of the government’s welfare plan after retirement.
This remark was made at the 25th Retirement Benefit Documentation Seminar at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja.
The event was organised for civil servants who are due to retire from the state public service between January and June 2024.
Speaking at the seminar, the Director-General of LASPEC, Babalola Obilana, urged the participants to take full advantage of the resources and knowledge shared at the event to better prepare them for the transition.
“Today, we gather here to discuss a topic of utmost significance to each one of us personally: the transition into retirement.
“This seminar has been organised to provide you with valuable information and resources to help make your retirement planning as smooth and fulfilling as possible,” he emphasised.
Obilana described retirement as a new chapter in the upcoming retirees’ lives. “It’s a time when we get to reap the rewards of our hard work and dedication and embark on a new journey of leisure, exploration, and self-discovery.”
While congratulating them, the DG admitted that retirement could be a time of immense joy and fulfilment, and it can also pose challenges.
He noted: “By planning and documenting your pre-retirement affairs meticulously, you are taking a significant step towards ensuring your retirement years are everything you hope for.”
On his part, the Head of Service, Olabode Agoro, appreciated the would-be retirees for their efforts in serving the state.
He said: “I’m happy you have put in your productive years to serve the state. We are grateful as a government.
“I also know that Lagos has been good to all of you here. You’ve had your ups and downs but you overcame it.”
Agoro assured them of the state’s plans for their welfare even after retiring, stating that their welfare is paramount in the heart of the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
One of the retirees, simply identified as Mrs Comfort, thanked the government for its thoughtfulness and willingness to make their transition seamless.
“This initiative is very good for us because it will help us to make a better and guided plan ahead of our retirement.
“I want to thank the Lagos State Government for this,” she expressed.
At the pre-retirement seminar, experts and professionals spoke on topics including retirement documentation under the contributory pension scheme.
Others are economic review and impact on pension funds, estate planning, managing your finances in retirement, and health talks among others.
