Dr Awele Elumelu: Woman at the Top

Beauty is only one of the many marks of an amazing woman. Included in this constitution are elements such as intellect, diligence, and vision. Dr. Awele, the wife of Tony Elumelu, has these marks in a healthy balance. As she exercises them even more frequently these days, it is not surprising that her fortune is gradually catching up to that of her husband.

Dr. Awele is turning out to be a top-tier Amazon among the female players of the corporate game in Nigeria. Initially only publicly invested in the medical field, Awele is coming out of her shell. 2023 saw her climb out of corporate obscurity and reach a height that many big players in the country are still struggling to cross.

It is true that her husband, Tony Elumelu, is a business and investment giant. His shadow reaches across industries. Nevertheless, Dr. Awele has not been benching on his influence alone. Instead, her guts have brought her this far, culminating in familiarity and experience, as well as a springboard for even greater things in the future.

Dr. Awele’s latest conquest is the package of United Bank for Africa (UBA) shares, totalling 9.6 million shares and valued at around N199 million. She is the most recent among the big guys in the corporate block that acquired such large fractions of the bank’s shares. Even though she bought these shares around the same time as her husband’s company, HH Capital Limited, her shareholder status in UBA lends softness to the board.

Dr. Awele’s acquisition of shares at UBA mirrors her accomplishments at Transcorp where her stake was last evaluated at 5.1 per cent with over 2 billion ordinary shares. If she manages to repeat this investment conquest at UBA, she’d be the biggest Amazon on the bank’s block for sure, with a greater momentum than her husband.

Without a question, Dr. Awele is on her way to the top. That is where she belongs.
