NFVCB Welcomes Stakeholders’ Calls to Strengthen Digital Content Laws

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has welcomed stakeholders’ calls for Nigeria to Strengthen its digital content laws.

The regulatory body equally vowed to punish any over-the-top (OTT) streaming service platforms found violating digital content laws.

The Executive Director/CEO, NFVCB, Adedayo Thomas, said this at the closing ceremony of the third Nigeria Digital Content Regulation Conference (NDCRC), held in Lagos.

Welcoming stakeholders’ calls on the government to strengthen the nation’s law on digital content distribution and consumption, Thomas acknowledged it was needed in view of the challenging digital content environment. 

According to him, “Well there will always be demand for the government to strengthen, this is one of the best ways to have effective policy for development in any sector, especially within the creative industry.

“Participation of stakeholders is highly important for the government to know what next as something must bring up issues and new development can be firstly noticed by stakeholders before the government. So, I am not surprised that they are calling for more strengthening.”

Also speaking, the Founder, Media Concern Initiative for Women and Children, Dr. Princess Olufemi-Kayode said as, “stakeholders in the creative industry tasks the Federal Government to strengthen the country’s digital content laws in order to curb safer digital content consumption by children.”

For the Executive Secretary Lagos State Film And Video Censors Board, Mrs. Bukola Agbaminoja, exposing a child to inappropriate content for his or her age amounts to child abuse.

According to her, “We are empowered to close down any cinemas and exhibitions centers that aid in exposing children to inappropriate content. The changing dynamics of digital content require immediate laws and regulation to make digital content safer for the children.”
