The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has expressed deep concern regarding the recent military airstrikes in Tudun Biri village, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, which resulted in the tragic loss of innocent lives during a peaceful religious festivity.

Addressing the media in Abuja, National Coordinator Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi highlighted the distressing incident where over 100 unarmed civilians lost their lives. Despite this, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) attempted to deflect blame, asserting that the Nigerian Army diligently distinguished between civilians and terrorists.

The CNG, however, finds this justification wanting in remorse and accountability, questioning the ethical conduct of the Nigerian Army.

Criticizing the disjointed explanations from the DHQ, Airforce, and Army headquarters, the CNG underscores concerns about the effectiveness of their operations. The lack of coordination within Nigeria’s security forces is identified as a significant contributor to insecurity.

Reflecting on past incidents, the CNG notes a pattern of civilian casualties in drone strikes, citing examples from Nasarawa, Yobe, Borno, Zamfara, and Niger States. The recurring nature of these incidents raises questions about the military’s modes of engagement and the government’s response.

Observing concerns about interagency rivalry, lack of collaboration, and a failure to address civilian casualties, the organization demands a transparent investigation into the Kaduna incident, compensation for victims, and a centralized command structure within the security forces.

They stand and recommendations include “ condemnation of the killings in Kaduna, rejection of the military’s accidental attack explanation, condemnation of the lack of coordination in the Armed Forces, and a call on President Tinubu to establish a centralized command structure. Additionally, they advocate for modern communication systems to enhance cooperation, an independent investigation into the Kaduna incident, demand for adequate compensation for victims, and emphasize community participation in curbing terrorist tactics. They stress the need to improve counterterrorism operations through enhanced intelligence gathering and coordination.”
