Enugu-Ukwu Development Union Celebrates Common Heritage, Honours Members

Enugu-Ukwu Development Union (ECDU), Lagos branch, recently, held the 18th edition of Enugwu-Ukwu Day to, aside having fun with families and friends, celebrate its common heritage.

Its women wing also honoured 10 deserving women with Matronship awards for their exemplary conduct and services to the community. 

In his remarks, the President, ECDU Lagos, Mr. Sopulu Steve, Nwakaeze Enugwu-Ukwu, expressed delight about the 2023 celebration, saying that it was an  opportunity to thank God, interact freely with family and friends in a special way, showcase its rich culture and tradition, as well as recognise and appreciate those who have either distinguished themselves in their various fields of endeavours, or impacted its people and humanity in the areas of human development, philanthropy and partnership. 

“As true citizens and custodians of Igbo culture, we use the occasion to remind our young ones of their route and heritage, and re-emphasize the importance of keeping touch with their home base. We therefore do not just eat, drink and dance, we redirect ourselves, and the upcoming generation towards the sustenance of our native values and morals.”    

He lauded the efforts of the President of the Women Wing, Dr. Felicia Agubata in ensuring a focused leadership to their wives and sisters, saying that with her at the helm of affairs of the women folks, the task of elevating the union and people to desired height, is very achievable. 

Agubata commended the awardees, saying that they modeled good conduct and are mentors to other younger women. 

Some of the awardees expressed excitement about the award saying that it provides an contribute to the development of the community and  humanity in general. 

Dame Chinwe Mba stated,” as a matron, my role is to ensure that everyone is carried along. I must show the virtue of humility and reach out to everyone from the grassroots to the apex. It is my responsibility to ensure that I represent my community in whatever capacity to restore unity and love within the community.”

She appealed to the women to strive to improve the welfare of members and community responsibility.

Mrs. Rebecca Okonkwo, promised to contribute more to the community by championing good moral and virtue where necessary.
