The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LSUBEB), recently organised an exhibition show of farm produce (crops and poultry), funded under the Agricultural Education Training Programme (AETP), in an effort aimed at encouraging farming among pupils.
Ninety public primary schools benefited from the fund for crop farming, snail rearing, poultry and fishing farming.
In his remarks, Chairman of the board, Dr. Hakeem Babatunde Shittu explained that the school farming programme funded by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), affords pupils an opportunity to practice agriculture, as well as to introduce entrepreneurship into the basic education programme.
“The programme is aimed at promoting agric-preneural skills in pupils as a strategy towards enhancing food production and job creation for the future,” he stated.
Shittu, who was represented by a member of the board, Hon. Adewale Jimoh, commended the teachers and pupils for their efforts in growing and rearing various crops and livestock.
He noted that farm products do not only feed the nation, but contribute to the economic growth of the nation.
He encouraged the pupils to sustain their passion in farming at their various schools/homes, and that the teachers should also ensure that the returns on the produce at the exhibition is judiciously used for sustainability of the project.
