The Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo in Ogun State, Prof. Ademola Tayo, has called on journalists to use their power to promote peace, unity and national development.

Tayo, who said this weekend, at a dinner organised for education writers, stressed the need for journalists to report the news in such a way that will bring people together rather than fanning the embers of discord.

He also urged them to recognise the limits and ethics that guide them as journalists, saying that it is critical to maintaining their professional integrity.

“By adhering to journalism ethics, guidelines, laws, and policies, you will not only ensure that your reporting is accurate, unbiased, and responsible but also protect yourself and your media house from legal and reputational risks,” said Tayo.

The VC stated that the media has the privilege to influence the opinions, thoughts, and beliefs of people through their reports in shaping public discourse and the opinions of citizens in the area of education by interrogating the role of government, the private sector and the parents in ensuring relevant and responsive educational programmes that train the youth for the present and the future.

“As journalists, you are all aware of the decisions you make, the stories you report, the pictures you paint, and the messages that are conveyed to your audiences,” Babcock vice-chancellor added. “It is your responsibility to strive always to put the peace, unity, and development of our country first in your reporting.”

He added, “We must understand that your actions could have significant impacts on our country. You must realise that while you enjoy the freedom to express yourselves, you must also recognise the limits and ethics that guide your profession.

“You must be cautious not to fuel hate or incite violence with your reporting. It is your responsibility to promote understanding, bring about constructive dialogue, and ensure that the public has access to accurate and unbiased information.”
