The House of Representatives has urged the Inspector General of Police to immediately implement the recommendation of the Police Service Commission (PSC) with respect to the promotion of concerned men and officers of the Nigerian Police Force.

This followed the adoption of a motion calling for the implementation of the Recommendations of the Police Service Commission moved by Kingsley Chinda at plenary.

Presenting the motion, Chinda noted the incidents of non-implementation by the Inspector General’s recommendations by the PSC for the promotion of qualified officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

He further noted that earlier in 2023, the PSC, in the exercise of its statutory responsibilities, at one of its meetings approved the promotion of several police officers, a notice of which was duly conveyed to the IGP to release signal and accordingly effect the same.

Cognisant of the fact that the IG subsequently ignored the PSC recommendation and deliberately neglected and/or refused to effect the release, despite measures taken by the PSC for him to do so.

Furthermore, he raised a concern that the IG’s refusal to act on the PSC’s recommendation was not in the best interest of the men and officers of the NPF and the country at large.

He added that unless swift measures were immediately taken to implement the PSC’s recommendations, the morale, commitment, and dedication to duty of the affected men and officers of the NPF were likely to be negatively affected.

The House however mandated its committees on police affairs and legislative compliance to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.

Earlier,  the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen had urged various committees that were unable to finish their budget defence to do so and submit reports latest by 8pm yesterday.

“I also want to inform you that the official day for the passage of the budget would be slated for Saturday 30, December, 2023,” he added.
