Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN) has inducted 95 new graduates of the Department of Nursing Science of the University of Jos into the Nursing profession with a charge to uphold the ethics of the profession as with utmost priority.
Represented by the Director of Social Duties, Mr. Yahaya Sunni, the Council Registrar, Mr. Farouk Umar Abubakar who administered the oath on the new nurses, also charged them to keep high standards, encouraging them to collaborate with other healthcare team members and learn on the job from their experiences.
Commending the department for giving a resounding training to the graduands, and for producing highly skilled nurses to contribute in improving the standard of healthcare services in Nigeria, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ishaya Tanko, who was represented by the Dean of Basic Medical Sciences, Prof. (Mrs.) Mariam Solomon observed that the university is the pioneer in training graduate nurses in the North central zone of Nigeria.
He stressed the importance of the graduates providing nursing care based on their theoretical knowledge and clinical skills, noting that the need for sound judgment arises from the ever-changing healthcare landscape and the increasing demands of families, groups, and communities.
He explained that, “The paradigm shift in nursing education was occasioned by the fact that the skills obtained from the conventional training institution were no longer adequate to meet the contemporary health needs and challenges of families, groups or communities.”
The Vice Chancellor reassured the graduates of the University’s ongoing support for the department, particularly with the recent acquisition of equipment worth millions of naira which culminated into the department getting full accreditation status in 2023, adding that plans are on to expand student’s intake and enhance the department’s capacity.
In his address, the Head of Department, Dr. O.A. Ogunyewo expressed confidence in the graduates saying, “Without any fear of contradiction, I can say that the graduates we churn out are well-equipped intellectually as they can compete with others from different climes.”
Attributing the success to the dedication of well-trained and intellectually inclined teachers and clinical instructors, Ogunyewo also proudly disclosed that the department and students have achieved 100% pass rate in accreditation and examinations six consecutive times.
He highlighted the department’s partnerships with healthcare institutions and universities, showing its dedication to research and innovation.
Ogunyewo, however acknowledged the challenges the department currently faces, particularly in terms of resource availability. He appealed to stakeholders, especially alumni, to contribute more books, journals, training, and ICT equipment to enhance the department’s resources, particularly as it prepares for the next professional accreditation.
