PEPC Foundation has feted 700 Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) workers in Ikorodu division with relief materials.
Like the previous editions, this year’s edition was also themed, ‘Love Beyond Xmas’ targeting 20,000 families across the state. This gesture is an annual intervention that has been on for five years, extending to areas such as Ibeju Lekki, Lagos Island and Lagos Mainland.
The event which held last Monday at Igbogbo Stadium, Ikorodu, excited the LAWMA workers across the area of the state.
The Foundation every Christmas put smiles on the faces of senior citizens, widows and single mothers in different parts of Lagos State, in continuation of its usual gesture of giving support to the vulnerable people.
Speaking at the occasion, the Founder, PEPC Foundation, Mr. Akinsanya Luqman, said LAWMA workers must be appreciated as they are the vanguard of cleanliness in the state.
According to him, “The sweepers are my people as I call them the vanguard of the state because they are awesome people. I see them in the rain, sun, late at night and early in the morning doing amazing jobs for their community.
“Growing up I know how important cleanliness is and their impact in Lagos is very important. I have been doing this for three years and I don’t want to stop because this will give them a sense of belonging, love that they desire. They must understand that they are loved and the public must appreciate them. This is what is pushing me to keep doing it.”
The relief pack includes various food items such as garri, rice, tomato paste, noodles, vegetable oil and seasoning spices.
Commending the gesture, the Chairman, Igbogbo/Bayeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ikorodu, Olusesan Daini, said “We are working with LAWMA to ensure our sweepers are well kept and protected and so we work closely with them to ensure their wellbeing is well taken care of.
“They are so special to us in the state; we know their importance and their use. We will do everything to protect them and take care of them. Having a non-governmental organisation doing this is a huge effort that must be commended,” he said. According to the organisers, interested residents who fall into the categories of targeted people in Ikorodu, Mainland and Lagos Island, will have the opportunity to benefit by nominating themselves or being nominated online.
