The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has unveiled the Skill Up Artisan (SUPA) programme, designed to upgrade about 20 million Nigerian artisans to international standards as well as eliminate quackery.

The ITF Director General, Afiz Oluwatoyin, made the disclosure during a stakeholders’ meeting with designated trade associations,  in Abuja.

Oluwatoyin explained that SUPA was part of the federal government’s renewed hope agenda, aiming to elevate Nigerian artisans to international standards and eliminate quackery.

He underscored the need to transform the perception of Nigerian artisans, positioning them as highly skilled professionals deserving of respect and competitive pay.

“ The strategic plan, involves the categorisation and training of artisans in both ITF and private training centres. The ambitious goal is to upskill 5 million artisans annually, culminating in a total of 20 million skilled artisans in four years.

“ The programme’s global impact, already have partnerships in advanced stages with countries like Germany and the United Arab Emirates,”  he added.

Speaking on behalf of the trade unions, a representative of motor technicians, Oseni Suleiman,  expressed optimism about the programme, emphasising the importance of unity among associations for effective regulation.

He applauded the focus on creating “super skilled artisans” and assured collaboration and support from the trade unions.

However, Suleiman raised concerns about the free registration, questioning the monitoring process once there is a massive influx of artisans.
