Poly Student Dies in Auto Crash in Kwara

A student of the Institute of Technology (IOT), Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, was yesterday morning killed at Sango round about in Ilorin, the state capital, while two others sustained severe injuries.
THISDAY checks revealed that the three students were on a motorcycle on their way to lecture at the polytechnic Institute of Technology centre in Adewole area of Ilorin when the tragedy occurred.
Driver of the truck heading towards Maraba from Sango was said to have suddenly lost control while approaching the roundabout and violently hit a vehicle in front, which in turn hit the motorcycle with the three students.
It was further learnt that one of the students on the motorcycle whose forehead seriously hit a pavement by the roadside died instantly, while the other two who sustained severe injuries were instantly rushed to the hospital.
The police officers from Traffic Control Unit of the state Police Command were still controlling the traffic at the time of filing this report.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the Police Command, ASP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said the driver of the trailer has been detained by the police at the A Division in Challenge Area of Ilorin, while the truck too has been impounded.
She said: “It’s very unfortunate that a student’s life was lost to the incident, while two others are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital.
“Though investigation has commenced but it’s annoying that the driver of the truck could not slow down to prevent the big bump at the roundabout, and lost control which claimed a life.’’
Similarly, the spokesperson of Kwara State Polytechnic, Hajia Halimat Garuba, confirmed the incident in an interview with journalists yesterday.
Garuba said: “It’s very sad that one of our students in IOT died in that accident. They were said to be on the motorcycle to attend lecture when their motorcycle was violently hit by the trailer.
Two other students who were also involved are said to be receiving treatment in a hospital .I can’t get you the details of their identities for now.”
