Cameroonian-American music sensation Libianca Fonji will be entertaining Nigerian music lovers tonight at the Heineken x Afrozons pre-Grammy Party. It is the second time the Heineken brand, which is marking its 150th anniversary, is throwing its weight behind the African pre-Grammy party.
Tonight’s celebration is significant for the brand not only as part of its music strategy for the industry but also to mark the recognition of African music at the Grammys. For the first time, the Grammys have a dedicated category that celebrates and recognises music from the African continent.
“We see the immense potential of African music and are proud to support its growth as a brand,” said Senior Brand Manager, Heineken, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Kola Akintimehin.
“Our sponsorship of the Afrozons African Pre-Grammy party is a pinnacle moment in our 150th-anniversary celebration, signifying our commitment to cultural richness and honouring the legendary contributions of music icons like Fela Anikulapo Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and Femi Kuti. Their impact on the global music stage aligns seamlessly with Heineken’s legacy of global excellence. Together, we can inspire and be inspired by the rich tapestry of culture and music that surrounds us.”
Sheila O, a recording academy member and convener of the Afrozons African pre-Grammy party, the creation of the African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammy Awards is a testament to the talents that abound in Africa and the hard work of individuals who have remained steadfast in propelling the music industry beyond the continent.
Her thoughts were echoed by Rico Love, the Chairman of the Grammys Black Music Committee who stated that he was in the country to not only celebrate the afrobeats stars who fetched nominations in the upcoming 66th Grammy Awards but to also educate the music community about the committee’s goals as well as encouraging them to become a voting member of the Recording Academy, the body that organises the Grammys.
Sheila O also confirmed that the legendary juju musician King Sunny Ade will be in attendance while Libianca and her friends will provide a musical ecstasy.
