Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday rejected the purported passage of the amendments bill on the local government councils’ polls by the state House of Assembly.

The House of Assembly last Wednesday passed the amendments bill on local government councils’ polls at its plenary and sent the bill for assent to the state Governor, Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

A statement issued in Ilorin by the PDP and signed by the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Olusegun Adewara, stated that the development would hinder the emergence of competent administrators at the local government councils level.

The party also said it would destroy local government councils system in the state.

The statement read: “That the Assembly will have the audacity to pass a bill that was unanimously rejected by Kwarans during a public hearing organised by same Assembly is not acceptable.

“Our party, the PDP, condemned the decision by the APC-led Kwara State House of Assembly to destroy local government system by championing the course that will extend notification period of LGA elections to one year which technically extended the conduct of the election in the state to 2025.

“We are, however, consoled that we made our position known to the public that the PDP in Kwara State will not be part of bad influence on democracy of our dear state.”
