Minimum Wage: Onyejeocha Prioritises Swift Delivery to Meet Nigerians’ Hopes

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has urged members of the newly formed National Minimum Wage Committee to expedite action and meet the deadline of April 1st with a new wage structure for Nigerian workers.

A statement by the minister’s Chief Press Secretary, Gabriel Emameh, said the minister made the call on Tuesday, after the inauguration of the tripartite committee by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the State House, Abuja.

The committee, with members representing the federal and state governments, the private sector, and organized labour, has been tasked by the government with the monumental task before them.

Recognising the importance of the body, President Bola Tinubu implored all committee members to embrace their new duties with utmost gravity, directing them to engage in extensive consultations with relevant social actors during their deliberations.

Onyejeocha, who is one of the representatives of the Federal Government in the committee, said there must be deliberate effort to beat the April 1st deadline.

She said: “Everything we are going to do must end before 1st of April. So, there is no delay because it is something that is backed by the law and we must obey the law.

“Of course, we are hopeful that we are going to speed up the process because all us know what the issues are. Nobody is new in this, we have been talking about this since last year. So I am confident that we are going to deliver based on speed and the expectations of Nigerians.”
