Renowned Poet Obii Ifejika Hosts “Lovers & Others” at the British Council in Lagos
In a memorable evening that unfolded at the British Council in Ikoyi, Lagos, attendees were treated to a blend of poetry, and music at the highly anticipated event, “Lovers & Others”, with a curated playlist that also celebrated iconic music and evocative poems.
Performed by the award-winning artist and poet Obii Ifejika, the event was a testament to the artiste’s prowess as Ifejika’s presentation of literary realism and naturalism took centre stage. The evening commenced with an opening address by Sheila Ojei, Country Manager, African Management Institute, as she commended the artiste and highlighted her passion as a quality worthy of emulation by other professionals in the industry.
Delivering the opening act with Tuface Idibia’s “If love is a crime,” the poetry showcase covered six thematic chapters with both calming and uplifting verses. In ‘Love’s Awakening’ and ‘Love’s Ecstasy,’ Obii’s lyrics evoked sensations of warmth and tranquillity. The ambience shifted during “Love’s Trials,” as Asa’s “Bibanke” uplifted spirits and encouraged a collective sense of resilience.
“Love’s Redemption” delved into the intricacies of love, while “Love’s Future” presented a heartwarming perspective on discovering inner peace and finding comfort in the company of a kindred soul. However, the most impactful moment came during “Love’s Gratitude” when Obii distributed cards to each attendee, urging them to share a memory symbolising love. Ten people shared their thoughts, which Obii incorporated into a special poem, making everyone feel included.
In a statement released after the event, Ifejika expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am thrilled and humbled by the overwhelming response to ‘Lovers & Others’. For me, this showcase is an appreciation of love and life, and it was truly gratifying to see the audience easily connect with and appreciate the art that we all work so hard to create. To see this vision come to life is an experience that transcends mere artistic satisfaction, and it makes this experience truly unforgettable.”
The British Council, a key partner in the event, emphasised its commitment to supporting the arts and providing opportunities for growth across different areas. “We are proud to be a part of such an inspiring and culturally enriching event. Ifejika’s evident talent and creativity truly aligns with our mission to help artists and cultural professionals achieve their ambitions and realise their potential,” said , Harry Kesiena, Arts Programme Manager, British Council Nigeria.
Ifejika’s storytelling prowess was showcased through the chapters, using poetry and music performances to showcase and emphasise her extensive repertoire that has garnered her appearances across Nigeria and Europe, including achievements such as the Cannes Young Lion Award for Design, and victory in the first National Poetry Slam.
Her poetic creations have been featured in campaigns and projects for distinguished organisations such as the United Nations, Heritage Bank and The McArthur Foundation. She is also a key contributor to the poetry theatre production, “Finding Home,” and her one-woman show, “Swallow,” commissioned by the British Council, left a lasting impact at the Lagos Theatre Festival.
