180 to Bag First Class Degree as BUK Graduates 11,284

The Bayero University Kano has set to award a total of 180 graduates with first class degrees at the 38th convocation ceremony of the university, scheduled to commence Tuesday.
Addressing a pre-convocation media briefing yesterday in Kano, the Vice- Chancellor(VC) of the University, Professor Sagir Abbas, said the 38th convocation was segmented into three days to enable the graduates and their families relish the ceremony.
According to him, a total number of 11,284 students including the undergraduate, postgraduate, and products of Aliko Dangote Business School.
The VC said 317 graduates will receive Ph.D. and 3,770 will receive Masters degrees during this convocation.
He added that Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote is expected to deliver the convocation lecture titled, “Role of Private Sector in Building a Sustainable Knowledge Economy in Nigeria.”
He further explained:”This year the institution is honouring the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, and the President of the African Development Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adeshina with Honorary Doctorate Awards.”
“In this convocation, we have a total of 180 with first class degrees, 317 graduates will receive PhD, and 3,770 will receive Masters degrees.
“Alhaji Aliko Dangote is to deliver a convocation lecture on Friday, 1st March. We picked him (Dangote) because we feel the purpose and essence of establishing a university is to serve the communities. And we feel, there should be a better and greater role between the university and the private sector.”
“When he comes, he is going to give us talks on this. So we feel this will be the beginning of bridging the gap between the university and the private sector,” he said.
He added: “BUK now ranked 5th in Nigeria based on the ranking body based in the UK. It ranked fifth after Covenant University, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, and Ekiti, all based in South West. So, by this, BUK is leading in 5 other regions, South East, South South, North West, North East, and North Central.
“We have plans to start Open and Distant learning from the beginning of next year 2025 and the University is making serious inroads in other innovative Scientific research sectors,” the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abbas however stated.
Similarly, the VC explained that the university would honor the President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, and the Deputy Senate President, and Senator representing Kano North, Barau Jibril, with honorary doctorate degrees.
