The Director-General of the Kano Hisbah Board (Shariah Police), Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, has resigned his appointment barely 24 hours after Governor Abba Yusuf, expressed shock over alleged human rights violations committed by some members of the Board.
In a meeting with Chief Imams of Jumaat Mosques at Kano Government House, Yusuf had decried the way and manner the Shariah Police maltreated some young men and women including students of various institutions of learning.
“I saw the video clip, it is disheartening. A man grabbed a young girl and threw her into a Hilux van as if she were a goat.
“They were using sticks and hitting these young persons and chasing them even as they were trying to run away.
“What would it be like if this kind of cruelty led to spinal cord injury in one of them?
“We need not to be too hard on the young ones lest they stray away. We need to treat them with kindness and be gentle on them so that they realise their mistakes and do the right thing,” the governor had lamented.
The governor had also advised against such mistreatment and abuse of the fundamental rights of individuals while insisting that proper measures be employed in dealing with situations like these.
However, in reaction the Commander-General of the Hizbah Board, Sheikh Daurawa, announced his resignation expressing his disappointment at the Governor’s statement.
“Currently, I’m in Kaduna State, meeting with lawmakers led by the Speaker to discuss implementing a mandatory pre-marital health check in Kano, similar to other Nigerian states.
“However, I’ve encountered discouraging comments from Kano, despite my efforts at Hisbah to promote societal morality in our society.
“I’ have actively engaged with Kannywood and TikTok celebrities, offering guidance and even providing financial assistance to some TikTokers and offered free counseling to Murja Ibrahim Kunya.
“Unfortunately for them, those from among them that disregarded our guidance faced consequences.”
“I wish to apologise to His Excellency the Governor for making him angry I am sorry. I hereby tender my resignation from the position he gave me in Hisbah, I wish him all the best in his leadership” Sheikh Daurawa stated.
