A non-governmental organization, FAME Foundation, is set to host its fifth annual international football tournament for women.

The competition themed, ‘Count HER In: Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,’ is in commemoration of the International Women’s Day, billed for March 8.

Briefing newsmen Friday in Abuja ahead of the event, Executive Director of FAME Foundation, Ms. Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello said it is aimed at addressing pressing challenges facing women globally.

Ogunleye highlighted challenges facing women to include inadequate funding for gender equality initiatives; violence against women and girls; inadequate access to education and health care and social norms and cultural practice.

She said: “The tournament, slated to take place at the Area 3 Football Pitch, Garki, Abuja, kicks off at 9 a.m. Teams from diverse sectors, including FIDA (International Federation of Women Lawyers), EAC (East Africa Communities), FAME, Team USA, AWITA (Association of Women in Trade and Agriculture), ANFS (Association of Nigeria Female Students), Canada, ASHWAN (Association of Women Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria), BET9JA, and BHC (British High Commission), will compete.

“Beyond the football matches, the event will feature side activities hosted by various organizations. Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN) will provide free screenings for cervical cancer, pap smear tests, hepatitis screening, breast examinations, HIV tests, counseling, and eye tests. EVA Nigeria will distribute free condoms to prevent STIs and promote family planning. Educational sessions aligned with the SDGs’ Vision 2030 will also be conducted.

“The occasion promises a festive atmosphere with cheerleaders, mascots, and other attractions. FAME Foundation extends an invitation to all, urging the media in Abuja and its environs to join and actively participate in this significant event.”
