Sightsavers, an international development organization, marked International Women’s Day has said since its inception it has facilitated access to treatment for trachoma for 70,000 women, protected 560 million women from diseases, and championed reproductive health services for women and girls with disabilities across eight countries.

The organization advocated for inclusive and accessible health services saying there is a glaring gender gap particularly affecting women and girls in Nigeria.

Sightsavers highlighted the leadership of Omosefe Osinoiki, a research associate, in addressing neglected health issues like female genital schistosomiasis (FGS), set to impact 56 million women in Nigeria.

Despite the severe consequences, a lack of information hampers effective prevention.

Osinoiki however emphasizes the ripple effect of investing in women’s health, stating that it elevates communities.

Country Director at Sightsavers, Dr. Joy Shu’aibu, on her part reaffirms the commitment to addressing urgent health needs globally, breaking barriers, empowering women, and fostering a healthier, more equitable future.

Sightsavers’ collaborative efforts focus on improving health services for women and people with disabilities, advocating for policy changes, and providing vital treatments and operations.
