A comprehensive study conducted in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Nasarawa state has uncovered significant discontent among Nigerians regarding the current government’s performance, with a staggering 83 percent expressing dissatisfaction.

The study, which was conducted by Greenlight Initiative in collaboration with LEAP Africa and the Nigerian Youth Futures Fund, sheds light on the sentiments of the populace towards government effectiveness.

According to the findings, a considerable portion of Nigerians, accounting for 56 percent, admit to never investigating government spending practices, indicating a lack of transparency and accountability.

Speaking yesterday at the Survey presentation, Data Analyst and independent researcher, Adeniyi Rasheed, emphasized the significance of the survey in understanding the challenges hindering youth engagement in governance.

He stated, “ The survey aims to identify critical issues undermining active participation in governance and areas where youth initiatives can intervene to address these challenges.”

“ We employed design surveys and utilized the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) model commonly used in social science research. Our rigorous evaluation process ensures the validity and reliability of the data collected.”

Rasheed outlined key recommendations for governance improvement, stressing the need for a cultural shift towards accountability and transparency within government agencies.

“ Government entities must prioritize educating Nigerians on demanding accountability. Additionally, there is a pressing need for increased efficiency and effectiveness in government operations to address the high failure rates and lack of responsiveness observed,” he said.

On his part, Programs and Grant Officer of GreenLight Initiative, Stephen Adebayo, emphasized the organization’s dedication to igniting youth action for accountability in governance.

Adebayo underscored the significance of the survey and gathering, linking it to critical national issues and the pivotal role of youth development in Nigeria’s progress, particularly emphasizing the need for accountability in sustaining effective governance.

He said, “ Our project titled “Catalyzing Youth Action for Accountability in Governance,” implemented in Nasarawa and FCT with support from LEAP Africa and the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund, GreenLight Initiative seeks to provide a platform for youth creativity and determination to flourish. Recognizing the youth as stakeholders in shaping the present and future, the project aims to overcome governance obstacles hindering youth contributions, fostering inclusive, transparent, and responsive governance structures.”

Also speaking, the Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiative (Delivery and Monitoring), Titilope Gbadamosi, emphasized the crucial role of Nigeria’s youth in shaping the nation’s future.

Gbadamosi highlighted the pressing need for accountability in governance, citing challenges such as corruption and a disconnect between leaders and citizens.

She called for concerted efforts to equip young Nigerians with the tools and knowledge to demand transparency and integrity from government officials.

She also pledged her office’s commitment to engaging youth across the country and empowering them to drive positive change.

Representing the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Agrih Sukukum, on his part delved into the intricacies of accountability in governance, highlighting the complexity of government as a system composed of multiple institutions.

He emphasized the importance of scrutinizing processes and administrations rather than attempting to hold the entire government accountable directly.

Sukukum urged the youth to gain a deep understanding of how the system operates to effectively advocate for change and avoid misguided efforts.
