The College of Law, Caleb University, Lagos, has signed a linkage agreement with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), to equip students of the university with multiple disciplines, and make them future-ready upon graduation.
The college also collaborated with the Public Interest Lawyering Initiative for West Africa (PILIWA), to groom its students in the act of public interest lawyering.
The group also inducted interested students into its international platform.
Speaking at the signing ceremony at the college recently, the ICSAN President and Chairman of Council, Mrs. Funmi Ekundayo, stated that in addition to the dual qualifications for students of the university, the linkage would enable members of the institute to mentor them to know the practical aspects of what they are taught in school.
She said the institute, which is about good governance, has developed a robust curriculum for the partnership, which would add value to the participants.
The Dean, College of Law, Prof. Foluke Dada, said the linkage agreement is important especially for the training of future administrators and it is all about ensuring that the students of the college are job-ready when they graduate.
She said the college has worked on an agreement that would ensure that the students will benefit from the wealth of knowledge both within and outside the university.
The dean stated that an extra curriculum has been designed as part of the linkage, to prepare the students as professional administrators.
“I am proposing that by the first semester of the 2024/25 academic session our students will be fully engaged and the Caleb College of Law will be a centre where other people who are taking the course can attend,” she said.
She added that the curriculum is designed such that lecturers from the main campus of the university, particularly from the Management Sciences and Administration will send lecturers to the college to teach the students, and some members of ICSAN will also participate.
She said it would be a two part programme where students before the completion of their bachelors degree already have completed half of the course and when they graduate, they will write two courses and complete the training.
Meanwhile, the South-south Coordinator of PILIWA Nigeria, Mr. Courage Nsirimovu, said the knowledge of public interest lawyering would enable the students upon graduation to stand up for social right, especially for indigent and disadvantaged people who cannot stand up for their rights.
As part of the grooming process, he said PILIWA will teach the students, they will also have field experience where they will render free services to communities. “We hope they will be able to imbibe that culture when they leave the university,” Nsirimovu stated.
