National Lottery Trust Fund’s Impact by the Numbers

Iyke Bede writes that that National Lottery Trust Fund’s excellent track record, earned high marks of  86.05  from  the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offence Commission’s (ICPC) Ethics and Transparency Index Report of 2023

Since its inception in 2005, the National Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF), created under section 35 of the National Lottery Act of 2005, has continued to play a pivotal role in national development through ‘Good Cause’ projects.

Sustained by a certain percentage of funds generated from the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC), the agency’s project scope has expanded to include education, sports, healthcare, and the provision of other social amenities, such as water, to communities.

So far, the NLTF has generated over N22 billion within 17 years. This figure is expected to increase considerably in the coming years, partly due to the growing sector that has yet to attain its peak. Many industry experts describe the sector as being in its nascent years, conditioned by growing infrastructure, inflexible regulatory frameworks, and the increasing number of punters.

During the pandemic’s challenging times, NLTF swiftly stepped in to bolster healthcare infrastructure across the nation. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, it extended support to 13 hospitals by supplying vital test kits and establishing one dedicated ICU facility for patients. It has also helped revamp 48 primary healthcare centres, equipping them with essential medical supplies and ambulances.

The NLTF’s commitment to education is evident through its widespread impact. Over 3,000 primary schools nationwide have benefited from distributing essential educational materials, ensuring students have access to quality learning resources. Furthermore, its investment in sports equipment has reached 13 federal universities, promoting physical activities and fostering talent development. Notably, NLTF’s sponsorship of the Paralympic Powerlifting World Cup emphasises its dedication to inclusivity and empowerment.

Additionally, it has extended support to 347 secondary schools by providing essential first-aid intervention kits, prioritising the safety and well-being of students and staff alike.

The agency’s reach extends beyond healthcare and education, as it concerns itself with community development initiatives to enhance residents’ quality of life. In Benue State, it has installed solar-powered boreholes in 15 communities, ensuring access to clean and sustainable water sources. Furthermore, upcoming projects in Rivers and Benue States aim to address the water needs of 14 communities by installing solar-powered boreholes, furthering NLTF’s commitment to sustainable development.

With its excellent track record, it is no wonder the agency lands atop the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offence Commission’s (ICPC) Ethics and Transparency Index Report of 2023, securing a score of 86.05

Indeed, the ‘Good Cause’ initiative is a testament to collective action’s transformative power. By harnessing the proceeds from lottery revenues, NLTF continues to make meaningful strides in uplifting communities and fostering progress.
