The Kwara state   incident, according to THISDAY checks, happened at Pakata Area in Ilorin, the state capital last Tuesday.

In a statement issued  yesterday,  which was signed by the NSCDC  Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ayoola Shola, the corps said: “On Tuesday, April 16th, 2024, at approximately 20:30hrs, the case was reported to the gender unit of the command by Alhaja Yusuf Mariam Joke, the Director of Child, Ministry of Woman Affairs, following a distress call from Babareke House, Ipata Oloje Area in Ilorin.

“Without delay, the command swiftly responded and apprehended the suspect after painstaking efforts by officers of the command.”

The statement  added: “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect frequently visited the victim’s residence under the guise of seeing his friend, thereby gaining access to the victim.

“He(suspect) lured the victim to an uncompleted building on the   December 1,  2023 and sexually assaulted her.

“Subsequently, on April 16th, 2024, he sent her to buy bread for him and then led her to a dilapidated building where he subjected her to additional sexual abuse.

“The victim disclosed that the suspect has been sexually assaulting her since December 2023.

“The suspect confessed to the crime and will be charged to a court of competent jurisdiction for onward prosecution”.

The statement,  however,  expressed great dismay at the alarming surge in cases of rape and defilement of minors, stressing that those who commit such awful acts will be punished severely.

The command urged  parents and guardians to remain watchful and ensure that their children are always in close proximity to them.

Meanwhile,  Anambra State government yesterday apprehended a 40-year -old rape suspect, Anietie Tim, for raping a 14-year- old girl in Onitsha.

The arrest came after several attempts, in which the suspect has been evading the authorities of Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Children’s Welfare.

The suspect, who hails from Etinan in Akwa Ibom State, during interrogation, said he didn’t know the victim was a suspect, stating that the girl was the one tempting him, and because he was a full blooded man, he had to react to her advances.

He said: “She was my girlfriend, and she was always feeling hungry as her family was starving her, so she always comes to me.”

Commissioner for The Women Affairs, Mrs Ify Obinabo, who questioned the suspect in her office, directed that he be handed over to the police.

She said: “He will be appearing before the Children, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka to answer for his crime.

“The incident happened in 2022 after which the suspect has been evading arrest. He had on different occasions threatened the mother of his victim claiming to be untouchable.”
