As Wizkid, Davido Renew Decade-long Feud
Ferdinand Ekechukwu
Why would Wizkid choose the moment he did in the early hours of April 29, 2024, to engage his teeming fans on X platform, formerly known as Twitter, to heat up social media space? It was about the same time Davido was setting out to celebrating the birthday of his wife and “special one”, Chioma, who recently turned 29, on April 30.
What ordinarily could have been fun and interaction between Wizkid and his fans was not without some shots at a couple of afrobeats stars, including Ladipoe, and Mavin owner, Don Jazzy. Wizkid’s time with his fans swiftly turned into a row as he further dropped shady comments that particularly triggered a face-off online between him and Davido.
This latest spat comes as a shock after the duo appeared to have squashed their beef just months ago, when they both partied in December 2023, with Davido also announcing Wizkid’s last project ‘S2’. A couple of weeks ago, a video of Davido trended on social media, showing him on his kneel, allegedly begging a lady for sex.
Their renewed beef followed the viral video Wizkid shared during the said session with his fans. Alongside the video, Wizkid asked his fans to beg him like Davido was captured before he releases new song. “Beg me like this. Send video. Y’all need it. I wish everybody luck. Every day I get things to say but my mouth no good.”
Wizkid and Davido have strong presence online. However, Wizkid is known more for his silence. So it’s newsworthy whenever he puts out a lot of posts like he did on this recent incident. So, that mischievous comment from Wizkid was not to be taken lightly by Davido, his 30 BG retinue and fans across other social media platforms.
The feud has seen the two talented acts drag each other so hard they even got dissing their family lives, career, individual personalities, lifestyle and superiority claim in the music industry.
By the way, the genre Afrobeats has suffered some form of disrespect lately from its frontline artistes – Wizkid and Burna Boy – who could be said to have actually benefitted from it more than the other afrobeat artistes.
Rema also didn’t hold anything back as he poured out his mind about everything concerning Afrobeats in a long Twitter rant that got fans talking a day before Wizkid and Davido social media exchange began.
In a follow-up tweet, like someone actually noted “the superstar artiste said, “Afrobeat AfroAnything,” a clear reference to the controversy over Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Fireboy’s recent claims that their music isn’t Afrobeats.” Like Wizkid saying he’s not an afrobeats artiste, and Burna Boy’s “afrobeats has no substance” account in an interview a few months ago.
There’s this view, in no particular order, of Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido as the big three. The Mavins artiste, Rema went on to rank himself in the same category as Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido, saying “no more big three, there’s now a Big 4,” and bared his mind on several topics around Afrobeats.
It is believed that Rema’s rant inspired Wizkid to taunt Davido, Ladipoe, and his record label’s boss, Don Jazzy, and Peruzzi on social media.
Expectedly, some of Wizkid’s and Davido’s colleagues and associates notably Odumodu Black and Samkleff have taken sides to support their favourites. Even their minions are not left out in the ongoing drama between the two superstars.
