Operatives of the Zonal Anti-Piracy Unit under the leadership of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 Command, AIG Olatoye A. Durosinmi, have arrested one Mr. Tayo Shakirudeen, for operating in the office of a medical doctor under false certification.
AIG Durosinmi, while briefing journalists yesterday, stated that a team of detectives led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Mariam Ogunmolasuyi, swung into action; arrested the suspect, conducted a search and recovered two suspected forged certificates.
He also noted that while the hospital has been sealed for further investigation, the suspect confessed to have obtained both certificates electronically saying his original educational qualification is the Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (SSCE).
The AIG added that “part of his confession is that he has a total of six staff; two of whom are trained nurses while four are amateurs. According to him, he worked as Nursing Assistant at Fabo Medical Centre in Majidun area of Lagos before establishing his own hospital and he has successfully carried out three surgeries; two Cesarean Session and one appendicitis, during his 3 years of unlawful practice as a medical practitioner.”
The 37-year-old Shakirudeen, a native of Ogun state, is the Medical Director of Skylink Medical Centre situated at Ako-Okuta Block Industry behind Uncle Bayus Schools, Elepe-Ikorodu, Lagos State.
While fielding questions from journalist, Sakirudeen revealed that he is the father of three children and had gained experience in surgery while he worked as a Nursing Assistant for two and half years.
He shared that as an SSCE holder practicing medicine, his fear was the shock at the success he achieved in the three surgeries he had performed.
He said: My name is Wasiu Sakirudeen from Ogun state, Abeokuta. I am married with three children. I’ve been practicing as a doctor for three years giving general treatments, Malaria, thyphoid and infection.
“This Appendicitis surgery is the first one I tried. I have worked somewhere before as a Nursing Assistant at Ojokoro, Ikorodu road for two and a half years before opening Skylink.
“My certificates from Obafemi Awolowo were forged. I used to help my boss then when he is performing surgery. I have only SSCE. I was afraid because of the success of the surgeries. I have six workers.”
According to the AIG, investigations so far revealed that he has been operating the hospital without the appropriate certification to practice.
The AIG therefore urged members of the public not to hesitate in giving information to the Police whenever they suspect unlawful practices of any kind.
