NBTE Initiates Overhaul of Entrepreneurship Education in Nigerian Polytechnics

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has launched an initiative aimed to overhaul entrepreneurship education in Nigerian polytechnics and similar technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions.
The Executive Secretary NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje, made this statement at the National Workshop for Entrepreneurship Education in Nigeria Polytechnics and Similar TVET Institutions (PHASE II).
With the theme of event, “Mastering Entrepreneurial Skills Development Modules,” Bugaje emphasized that amidst the backdrop of Nigeria’s persistent unemployment challenges there is a need to pivot towards a culture of innovation and self-reliance among Nigerian graduates.
According to him, “NBTE has undertaken a comprehensive review of the curriculum, with a renewed focus on integrating entrepreneurship into various disciplines.
“In entrepreneurship, we learn about running a business, and acquiring the skills or momentum needed to become engaged as an employer and start up a trade after graduation.”
He however addressed the challenges that may occur in the future, acknowledging the need for concerted efforts to overcome institutional barriers and cultural norms that may hinder the adoption of entrepreneurship education in some regions.
He added, “We must differentiate between the internship program and skills development and the complementary nature of these initiatives in preparing graduates for the realities of the workforce.”
The Executive Secretary TETFund, Arc. Sunny Echono, on his part noted that the vision aims to equip Nigeria’s youth with the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market, emphasizing the importance of entrepreneurship and other skills like Artificial Intelligence, AI.
He added that the initiative marks a significant departure from traditional education models, signaling a shift towards a more innovative and globally competitive workforce.
He said: “The key highlights of the plan include the implementation of a student loan scheme and a comprehensive review of curricula to incorporate entrepreneurship education. By fostering an entrepreneurial mindset from an early age and providing support for enterprise development, the government aims to unleash the potential of the nation’s youth to drive economic growth and innovation.”
