The Terra Kulture in Lagos was abuzz with excitement as Governor Sanwo-Olu, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and other esteemed guests gathered for the premiere of the highly anticipated biopic, “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti”, on Sunday night.
Crafted by the visionary Bolanle Austen-Peters, this cinematic masterpiece tells the story of a woman who dared to challenge the status quo and fight for justice.
“Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” is a testament to the power of courage and resilience, following the life of Fela’s mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, from her pioneering days as the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her marriage to Israel Ransome-Kuti. Together, they ignited a fierce battle against colonial and traditional rulers, challenging oppression and creating the Abeokuta Women’s Union.
With its brilliant storytelling, unique characters, and stunning craftsmanship, this biopic is a must-see for anyone who believes in the power of women and the importance of equality. The film’s stellar cast, including Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, and Jide Kosoko, adds depth to the conversations on women’s rights and identity.

Bolanle Austen-Peters, recognised by Forbes Afrique and CNN, led the production, while Joseph Umoibom, with 17 years of industry experience, contributed significantly. Lance Gewer’s cinematography skillfully captured Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s story.
