The Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Abuja Zone has inaugurated its 10th Executive members in Abuja, with Mrs. Nwando S. Chukwurah as the maiden female chairman.

In her acceptance speech after the inauguration at the Well Carlton Hotel in Abuja yesterday, she said, “I have served in various capacities and today I am delighted to be the first chairman after our chartership. It is a joy.”

Chukwurah stated, “My colleagues and I in the executive committee will take cues from the national leadership and past chairmen to promote the high-quality training that IoD is known for, engage stakeholders, and leverage the body of knowledge within our members to uplift the Abuja zone.”

According to her, “Our focus areas will be growth, innovation, and engagement. We plan to achieve this by reactivating normal relationships, fostering engagement, creating opportunities for directors and other professionals to interrogate policies, and advancing advocacy.

“We strongly believe that supporting our members and businesses will enable us to effectively create long-term value for the institute.”

While speaking on the challenges, she explained, “It is not going to be easy, but I think I am prepared for it because I have served in various capacities as secretary, treasurer, and council member before stepping up.

“I know I am very prepared for this. It is a big challenge, but we will elevate the Abuja zone to greater heights.”

On empowerment, she explained, “When I joined the institute, a woman was the National President. I believe IoD is gender-sensitive and inclusive. We have women on the board and executive, and even as chairs before.

“We are not gender-biased. Women will definitely have a role in our administration.

“We are all about inclusiveness. We definitely want to create an environment conducive for businesses to thrive, and for the directors of these companies with members of IoD to promote skills to drive their businesses.”

She pledged to work together with past administrations to bring changes to the Abuja zone and implement innovative ideas that will encourage all our members to return.

The Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Ahmed Rufai Muhammed, said, “Our prayers are that God will grant your desires and the wisdom you need for a successful tenure.

“You were elected because the members trusted you. Because of your character, integrity, and transparency, you must prepare yourself to govern them.

I urge you to learn good ideas from your executive committee, and most importantly, always hold them accountable.”

On his part, former chairman of the branch, Mr. Joseph M. Tsavsar, said, “As a past chairman, we are still here to support you.

I have no doubts that the 10th chairman of this institute, having served in different capacities, will be better than what we did.”
