NCF Urges Nigerians to Collectively Address Environmental Issues

Nigerians have been urged to get involved committedly in solving the nation’s environmental problems.
Hon. Justice R.I.B Adebiyi Chairman NEC of NCF, stated this in his opening remarks at the 22nd Chief SL Edu Memorial Lecture of Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) on the topic Carbon Credits opportunities and pitfalls.
Hon. Adebiyi said, “Environmental problems are numerous, serious and require urgent attention, they include deforestation: Forest cover in Nigeria has reduced from 10% to 6% within the last three decades, species loss remains on the increase as they lose their natural habitat, loss of biodiversity, Greenhouse Gas emissions; which leads to the trapping of heat and leads to global warming. Climate change: which causes rising sea levels, extreme weather events, land degradation, fresh water shortage and food insecurity.
“Other human activities that affect the environment are industrialization, Air
Pollution, intensive farming practices; such as use of heavy pesticides and fertilizers, water contamination and pollution, over fishing, improper waste management, urbanization to mention a few.
“It is important that we pause and reflect on how we can individually and collectively commit to and make a positive impact and difference to these numerous and interrelated environmental issues. We all can by making responsible choices, adopting sustainable practices; such as reducing our carbon footprint protecting natural habitats, phasing out the use of single use plastics, all contribute towards safeguarding the Earth for future generations

Hon.
